Civic Engagement as a Basis for Social Justice
What is Civic Engagement?
- working to make a difference in the civic [public] life of our communities and developing the combination of knowledge, skills, values, and motivation to make that difference.
- promoting the quality of life in a community, through both political and non-political processes.
What is Social Justice?
- A concept of fair and just relations between the individual and society.
- Areas of concern almost always maintain a moral obligation to its citizens.
- Measured by the explicit and implicit (unspoken) terms for the distribution of wealth, opportunities for personal activity, and social privileges.
Why is Social Justice Important?
- Social Justice is important because it promotes and works toward a society that celebrates diversity and equality.
- Having more equality and diversity in a society is good for society because it promotes opportunity, growth, and social well-being.
